Sick but still happy

I've been a little sick with just barely a nagging sore throat and cold for the past several days. In a way, that absolutely drives me nuts. Especially with this move to Colorado coming up when we're trying to fix up the house the best we can for renting it out. I've been trying to paint trim and clean with this stuff, but let me tell you it's a pain!

However, I can't complain too much, because even in the middle of illness (which really isn't severe anyway), I have been so blessed! A great example would have to be Saturday. In the midst of all of the work we did on Saturday, it was an absolutely beautiful day, not to mention a perfect start to Memorial Day weekend! I can remember sitting around the house in the midst of working, and I can remember thinking what a beautiful day it was outside! We had the windows open because it was the perfect temperature. It was sunny out and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and all of the homes on our street looked perfect and well taken care of! All of the lawns and trees and everything are green right now, and everyone had their flags out for Memorial Day. It was really beautiful!

Yesterday was also a great day. While we were still doing work on the house, and while I was still sick, it was yet another beautiful day out! I watched the movie Frequency, which you should see if you haven't already. It was perfect! Anyway, that's just an update for now! Good to write!

Congratulations, Adam!

My brother Adam has finally graduated from college. Almost two weeks ago (on Evan's birthday), he finally graduated from the University of Illinois at Springfield. He went online there for about 2 years, and he's now done.

When talking about my brother Adam, I of course have a lot more memories to recount than with my nephews, but I will try to keep this brief just the same. It's difficult though, as he's a great older brother. He's been around as long as I have, and while we certainly had our rocky moments (what siblings don't?), most of my memories are good!

While where to start is tough, I think I've found one point that I will pull out of the air. It is simply how proud I am of him. Ever since Adam decided to go back to school to pursue his degree, I have been amazed by him. Over the past couple of years, he has worked like mad to gain his Bachelor's. I have heard countless stories of him staying up until all hours of the night studying and working on homework because it is the only chance he has to do it oftentimes. Over and over again, I look at how busy he is with working full time each week in addition to caring for a wife (who also works full time) and two little kids. Whether or not I could do such a thing is without doubt a firm negative! I couldn't imagine working as hard as he does. On top of that, he's graduating with a considerably higher GPA than mine...not bad!

One thing about Adam that you have to understand is his forced honesty. The fact of the matter is he has to be honest because he has never gotten away with a lie in his life. Growing up, he could never get away with anything. It's kind of funny now, but it was sad then. My brother Jarod, who always got away with just about everything, and I, who got away with some things, although I wasn't as good as Jarod, looked upon Adam with pity. He just didn't have the slyness to get away with things we did. However, in this day and age, it's something that I've come to appreciate about him in that he's willing to tell people what he's thinking. If he disagrees, he'll let you know and why, rather than just smile and let you feel like you're right even if he may have info that would help you reconsider for a more educated opinion. I respect that in him, and I am sometimes amazed at just what his mind seems to process oftentimes in the areas of theology and philosophy. Some of it I understand and some of it goes right over my head. Just the same, I think it's great how he loves achieving however much he can and thinking it out.

The thing that I probably appreciate most in Adam most recently though is his desire for the Lord. This is most clearly communicated to me through his children. Evan is still a little young to communicate any type of spiritual matter as of yet, and of course Ethan still isn't a great theologian, but just the same, I can already see in Ethan a desire to do what's right for the Lord. He clearly has the faith of a child, and he loves going to church. My mom told me recently that a couple weeks ago, they went with Adam and Amy to church, and while they were there, Ethan asked my dad if he would like to see Ethan's Sunday School classroom. When Dad said sure, Ethan went off running to his classroom because he was so excited that Grandpa wanted to know more about the church he goes to. On top of that, my parents said that they sat in on Adam's Sunday School lesson that day and that Adam was absolutely the best Sunday School teacher they've ever heard! Certainly these are all strengths that the Lord has given to him, but it also communicates his desire to pursue and come closer to and worship Jesus. It communicates the relationship that's there, and I can sense it in Adam's life as well. I can sense it in his desire to stand up for truth rather than just let a lie slip by and not do anything about it. I can see it in his continued study of spiritual matters. It's absolutely wonderful, and it's just one more reason that it's great to be his younger brother.

In a nutshell, I'm simply trying to say that I'm proud of Adam and that I love him. I'm so glad that you have achieved much, and that you will continue to achieve, and I simply can't wait to see what else you will do in your life. Adam is a wonderful older brother, and I can't express how glad I am that I grew up with him.

CONGRATULATIONS ADAM!

Yet another birthday!

Okay, so I'm just a bad uncle. It's been about two weeks since my second nephew had his birthday, and I haven't posted anything for him yet! Mind you, I do like to claim the excuse of finals and graduation getting in the way. However, that can only work for so long before it just starts to become ridiculous. I graduated on Saturday, and I still don't have his birthday post up! BAD DREW!

Anyway, yes, my nephew, Evan, is now 2 years old. I can't believe it either. Like with Ethan, I can remember the first time that I went to visit Evan in the hospital. It had to be the day after he was born this time because I was away at college on the day he was born and came home after finals the next day. Soon after I got home, my dad took me up to the hospital to see him, and he was in the room with his mom, and his Niebur cousins were there too. Ashley, Amanda, Abby, and Andrew (hey, I just now noticed all of their names start with "A") were all there, and to tell you the truth (hopefully he'll never read this), Andrew was being a little bit of a pest. He was just kind of at that stage in life where every kid is annoying, but he was certainly no exception, I'll tell you that much! Just the same, Evan wasn't in such a great mood either (I won't tell you why, as I would be pretty embarrassed if someone told that reason for being grumpy about me). Just the same though, I got to hold him and talk with him a little bit. He was so neat! He looked just like his big brother (which was certainly a good thing), but ever since day one he's had his own special personality too.

Unfortunately, our time at the hospital with him had to be somewhat short, but the good news is, we have since made up for that. Although for the first few months of his life, it seems like all Evan ever did was sleep, it gave me the opportunity to hold him during those times. There's not a whole lot more that helps you rest than holding a sleeping baby. Don't worry...I never fell asleep with him in my arms! However, some of the most peaceful moments I can remember around babies were while Evan was sleeping in my arms. He was so peaceful!

Another neat thing about Evan is his happiness. I know that seems like such a vague term, but it really does apply to Evan, and there seems to be no stronger word to describe his personality these days. Since he was born, Evan has become absolutely one of the happiest, smiliest kids I know. He laughs so much, smiles constantly, and is just all around friendly. Yeah, he can be shy, just like all kids his age, but he's also a barrel of laughs. Just the other day, I can remember watching him sing with my mom. They sang the ABCs, and the whole time, you have never seen a baby and grandma who were so happy! They laughed the whole time! I just wish I had had a camera available at that very moment because it was truly a "Kodak Moment," as the old commercials used to say.

All in all, I have seen Evan grow in tremendous ways in the past year. I have seen him go from a very introverted, quiet baby, to an extremely warm, friendly, toddler around whom anyone would feel happy and welcome. As an uncle, I certainly have an obligation to love my nephews, but Evan certainly makes it easy! He's funny, enjoyable to be around, and of course, cute as a button. He also has a rambunctious attitude which my mom swears is payback to his daddy. I love it personally, but I can also understand that certain people get a little worn out by him.

Anyway, summing this all up, I guess that the point of this is all just to say how much I love Evan. He has truly been such a neat part of my life since he was born two years ago. I can no longer imagine life without this special guy, and even if I could, there's no way I would want to. He's truly a blessing from God, and I praise the Lord every day for sending him to us.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVAN!

Happy Birthday, Neph!

Today, my older nephew, Ethan, turns 4. Wow! I am absolutely amazed and cannot figure it out where in the world the time has gone.

Ethan is, in fact, an amazing little kid. I understand that as his uncle, I have a biased predisposition to think so, but truly he is such a neat person! He smiles and laughs so much, those around him can't help but follow suit, and I just all around enjoy spending time with him. Whether it's sitting down and watching a movie with him, lying on the floor and letting him bounce up and down on my stomach (which, might I add, is not a good idea right after supper), or going out in the yard and tossing a baseball around with him (I've gotta be careful how hard I throw it at him though), he's a blast!

I can remember the day he was born. I was at home taking a nap when my brother called asking for Mom and Dad. "They're not here right now. Was the baby born yet?"

"Yep!" Adam said.

"Is it a boy or a girl?" I asked excitedly.

"He's a boy. Guess how big he is!"

"I have no idea," I replied.

"Nine pounds, eight ounces!" he responded.

"Is that big?" I asked.

"Yeah, that's very big," Adam replied.

"What's his name?"

They didn't have a name for him just yet, but sure enough, a day or two later, they came up with Ethan, which means "strength" according to my sister-in-law. Had you seen or held him on those first couple of days, you would understand why they gave him such a name.

I will never forget walking into that hospital later that same day and seeing him for the first time. I can remember bragging to the other people who were looking into the nursery, "That's my nephew!" That first time I held him was truly a memorable moment. I felt this overwhelming sense of peace. I had to remind myself over and over again how biased I must be to think that he was so wonderful in comparison to all the other kids in the hospital. However, I couldn't convince myself otherwise.

Since that first great day of Ethan's life after birth, he has grown and learned, and it never ceases to amaze me how smart he is. He continues to be a very big kid (tall, not fat), and in these four years he has experienced much. He has become a big brother, started pre-school, been converted by his Uncle Drew from holding Bob the Tomato to Larry the Cucumber as his favorite Veggie Tales character, and he absolutely loves movies about baseball (The Sandlot is his current obsession) and dogs (he just recently discovered how much he likes the movie Beethoven). He's also learned to be tough, as in the last year he has not only been diagnosed with epilepsy, but also has a little brother who likes to jump on and attack him as often as possible (the pulling on the ears thing is getting especially old if you ask me).

Just the same, after all that has happened, I haven't gotten tired of him one bit. I continue to love him more and more each day, and now I couldn't even begin to imagine life without Ethan in it. He's a special kid, and that's why I now say to him:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ETHAN!

Congratulations!

This is a few days late, I know, but I would just like to send congratulations out to an online friend of mine, Jon, who this past Saturday tied the knot to a very lovely girl by the name of Jenny in the Dallas, Texas LDS Temple. I pray the richest blessings on your marriage and that you will truly have a happy life together from here on out! Congratulations to both of you!

Canada Busy Sending Back Bush-Dodgers

I first got this in e-mail a few months ago right after the election. I find it absolutely hilarious. I hope you enjoy it too!

Canada Busy Sending Back Bush-Dodgers

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The re-election of President Bush is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal-rights activists, and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. "I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. "He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?" In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. "Not real effective," he said. "The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk."

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves. "A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions," an Ontario border patrolman said. "I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though."

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the Bush administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR.

In the days since the election, liberals have turned to sometimes ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. "If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age," an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. "I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can't support them," an Ottawa resident said. "How many art-history majors does one country need?" In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, Vice President Dick Cheney met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals, a source close to Cheney said. "We're going to have some Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. And we might put some endangered species postage stamps. The president is determined to reach out."

Diary of a Cat

DAY 752
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant.

DAY 761
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. I must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repel these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favourite chair ... must try this on their bed.

DAY 765
Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm...not working according to plan.

DAY 768
I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo". What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

DAY 770
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odour of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly, I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

DAY 773
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...
